God is perfect in all ways. We are not perfect; however, because we are not perfect does not mean that we should not be looking to Him to help us overcome our many weaknesses, our imperfections, and our short-comings. He is to be the standard to which we hope to attain. We don’t look to other humans for our standards of righteousness but to God. People change. God does not change. God wants us to be perfect in His sight. He, like His Word (the Bible) is perfect, flawless, needs no correction or updating.

Study Psalm 119 and what it says about those who study and follow God’s Law, His Word, His Statutes, His precepts.

Every person was created to be pure, holy, perfect, righteous, good. We are to run from sinful things in our lives and to never respond to sin: “Nobody is perfect.” God tells us that we are to be perfect. Be ye therefore ______________, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. Matthew 5:48

We are to look toward perfection and not make excuses as did Adam and Eve for our shortcomings. We are to speak kind words. We are to forgive one another.  Having the “image” or “likeness” of God means, in the simplest terms, that we were made to resemble God—not in the sense of Him having flesh and blood as we do, but in attributes such as some of those listed above. God is a Spirit. Jesus, as He was God manifest on this earth as man was fully man and fully deity (God). As man, he had flesh and blood:

As man, Jesus had physical attributes of man:

Luke 24:37-39

Practical Applications and Review

  1. Scripture says that “God is spirit” (John 4:24) and therefore exists without a human body as we know it. 24 God is a ____________: and they that worship him must ____________________ him in spirit and in truth. John 4:25
Luke 24:39:  Behold my _________________ and my _________________, that it is I myself  [Jesus]: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not ________________________________ and ______________________________, as ye see me have.
  2. Part of our worship of God includes how we live every day:
  • The manner in which children talk to and about their parents
  • The words and intonation as we speak to our children, friends, loved ones, and enemies.
  • The things we let come into our ears.
  • The things we watch with our eyes.
  • The lifestyles we live: Where we go; functions we attend; with whom we prefer to associate as close friends.

Consider how you answer the call to be pure and holy as it relates to Psalm 101:2-3: I will___________ myself wisely in a________________ way. O when wilt thou come unto me? I will walk within my house with a ____________ heart. 3 I will set no __________________ before mine __________: I hate the work of them that turn aside [commit sin]; it shall not cleave to me.

Ephesians 6:1-3: 1 Children, ________________ your parents in the Lord: for this is ____________. 2 Honour thy _________________ and ___________________; (which is the first commandment with promise;) 3 That it may be ________ with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

Palm 139:14: I will praise thee; for I am ________________ and ____________________ made: marvellous are thy [God’s] works; and that my soul knoweth ______________________ well.

The image of God refers to the intangible part of man—that which you cannot touch.

  1. The image of God is the part you cannot see or touch—the intangibles of who we are (our soul and our spirit). They are what set man apart from the animal world. God created everything out of the dust of the earth; however, what did He do with the “clay” of man He did not do to plants and animals?7 And the LORD God formed man of the __________ of the _____________, and __________________ into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a _______________ soul. Genesis 2:7 Review the teaching, “Do we have soul mates.”
  2. Complete the following from Ephesians 4:24-32: 24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in _____________________ and true holiness. 25 Wherefore putting away _____________ … 26 Be ye angry, and ________ not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath [Don’t go to bed with anger or unforiveness in your heart] 27 Neither give place to the devil. 28 Let him that _____________ steal __________ … 29 Let no _____________ communication proceed out of your ________________, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers … 31 Let all _______________________, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and ______________________, be put away from you, with all malice: 32 And be ye ___________________ one to __________________, ______________________, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven __________. IF we don’t _______________ others, God will ________ forgive us.

It’s impossible to reflect the image of God without the help of God.

11 But they that ____________ upon the LORD shall _______________ their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be ___________; and they shall walk, and not faint.  Isaiah 40:31

We must daily study the Word and apply it to our lives. If we don’t know what the Word says, we cannot obey it. We must hide (study and memorize) God’s Word in our heart: what it is that God says: 15 __________ [the Bible] to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, ______________ dividing [interpreting and applying] the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15

Notice we’re told to STUDY as a workman—not casually reading or depending on others for our spiritual nourishment; and then, we are to apply it contextually to our lives. When we rightly divide the Word, as WORKMEN, we study the context and correctly interpret what is written, taking into consideration God’s overall messages on a particular topic. Studying the Bible is not to become a casual activity with the phone in one ear and the eyes glancing on TV or some other technology. It is to be a time set aside from all other distractions to seriously dig into the Scriptures through studying surrounding verses and cross references. Some outside resources can give us understanding but the Word must be held above all outside resources.

Notice the subtle changes the authors of the NIV make in 2 Timothy 2:15:

15 Do your best [This is not the same as a workman, as one who is studying.] to present yourself to God as [The substance is changed into a figure of speech.] one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15-16
