Picture of a church with sign for Fall Festival; casper the ghost in skyMany who read the title to this teaching may immediately think of what has become a national celebration called Halloween. It’s a day when children and adults go trick or treating, attend costume parties, carve jack-o’-lanterns, visit haunted attractions, play pranks, tell scary stories, and watch horror films with visions of scary ghosts floating in and out of space. It’s an event which has as its focus all kinds of demonic activity at its forefront.

The question is often asked whether or not Christians should participate in such activities. Many churches host “alternative” fall festivals and related activities they feel are acceptable substitutes for the trick-or-treat, begging for candy in local neighborhoods, and the donning of scary costumes. Some do this by hosting activities permitting, instead, Bible character costumes and others such as Casper the acceptable, friendly ghost rather than a scary ghost.

Holy GHOST gets a bad rap!

Whether or not Christians should attend a “placebo” Halloween celebration event, however, is not the focus of this article. It is, instead, taking a look at the name Holy Ghost and perhaps reviving a reverence to Him that has been lost through wrongful associations and “replacement” authors.

Several years ago, I attended a church planning meeting and was shocked when one of the leaders shared that in her Sunday school classes she didn’t allow the children to use the King James Bible because that Bible had the scary expression Holy Ghost, a term that she said frightened the little ones.

Conflicting beliefs lead many astray.

However, the sad reality was that the Bible she was using had the noun ghost in it as do all Bibles (at least all that I have been able to research). What is missing is the Holy Ghost. Oh how the enemy hates the HOLY Ghost.

Historical Bibles retain the name Holy Ghost.

Not only did the translators of the King James Bible retain the NAME Holy Ghost in the New Testament, but many who went before them had the same discernment. For example, the Holy Ghost is found in:
  • Wycliffe’s translation 1395,
  • Tyndale’s New Testament 1525,
  • Coverdale 1535,
  • Bishops’ Bible 1568,
  • The Geneva Bible 1599,
  • Mace N.T. 1729,
  • Wesley’s N.T. 1755, and the
  • 1611 King James Bible.

It wasn’t until a group of people obtained permission to create the Revised Version of 1881 that the name Holy Ghost was removed from Bibles created thereafter. Sadly, succeeding versions have followed suit; thus, absent from new version Bibles is the Holy Ghost.

Looking for the missing Ghosts!

Before doing some research, I wasn’t aware that the name Holy Ghost is used ONLY in the New Testament, and, ninety times. Why 90? I’m not sure. There are many theories. Notwithstanding, there is no doubt that the LORD has an underlying, invisible, internal structure that runs throughout the entire Bible which cannot be broken by adding to or subtracting from the Word as it has been preserved:

… the scripture cannot be broken.
Perhaps that’s why the LORD warns so many times for us not to add to or subtract from the Words written in the Bible.

Fear removing the Holy Ghost.

And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
Matthew 10:28

… If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. Revelation 22:18-20

And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.
Matthew 12:32

The Principle: The structure of the Bible is like a puzzle in that if you change the shape of some of the pieces, the image can never be correctly put together.

Altered puzzle pieces never fit.

Historical Bibles retained the name Holy Ghost.

It seems that the some 50 translators of the King James Bible, the many pastors with whom they received input, and those who went before them, saw a fine-lined difference between Holy Ghost recorded 90 times in the New Testament), Holy Spirit/holy spirit used three times in the Old Testament and four times in the New Testament, and spirit/Spirit recorded almost 500 times.

The same underlying Greek root word is used for both ghost and spirit, thus, many wrongly conclude there is no difference between the two words.

However, as in all languages, words have many different meanings depending upon their contexts; that is, how they are used in the sentence.

If, for example, my topic is transportation, I have to know where and how I am traveling. If I’m going to a neighborhood store, transportation could be my bike. However, if I’m traveling from Florida to Jamaica, I could not ride my bike as there is a huge expanse of water between the two locations.
Mode of transportation depends on context.

Unique, talented, scholarly men preserved underlying texts.

The 50 King James translators, who worked on the translation over a period of seven years, were highly qualified. They had command of several languages (including historical cognate languages), were expert grammarians, and were holy men of God who collaborated together for several years within a complex, structured framework. They considered not only:
  • linguistic details and
  • a complex grammatical construction, misunderstood by most today: “Ye,” “Thee,” “eth endings”
  • but they understood the importance of context within the confines of a word-for-word translation format.

As is apparent in their finished work, they perceived a difference between what they translated as the Holy Spirit/spirit and what they deemed was credited to the Holy Ghost.

Our part is to study AND defend what has been supernaturally preserved, not to disturb the intricate underlying warp and woof threads of this masterful tapestry.

Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.
Jude 3

Disclaimer

This study on the Holy Ghost is not definitive nor do I have “all understanding” regarding Him. However, it is hoped that this teaching will encourage the reader to search the Scriptures on the vital topics covered in this teaching to better draw conclusions. We should all be like the noted Bereans who:

… searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
Acts 17:11

Holy and ghost are very different words individually than are they when combined as Holy Ghost.

Most would agree if we look at the two words holy and ghost individually, different thoughts come to mind between the two words. Those images likely have quite opposite meanings. Some potential synonyms for these two words are given below:

Holy and Ghost individually are different than when combined.
Tragically, the rejection of the word ghost is often related to non-biblical images and practices prohibited by God such as are identified with Halloween and other occult practices. These include familiar spirits, wizards, charmers, necromancers (fortune telling, communicating with the dead, magical spells, etc.). Check a concordance to study the many Scriptures which prohibit any occult practices.

A ghost is clearly defined in the Scripture.

When we die, we “give up the ghost.” It’s at that moment that the life-giving spirit that God breathed into us at birth leaves along with our soul. They separate from the body, and the body returns to dust. A ghost has no existence after death. The souls of those who are saved go to Heaven; the souls of those who are not saved go to Hell. There is no redemption or change in our eternal state once a person “gives up the ghost”; that is, dies. Study the table below to learn the Biblical, contextual meaning of ghost from the Bible.

We are three-part persons: spirit, soul, and body.

(Review our teaching, “Do we have soul mates?”) Our “ghost,” the spirit and soul (the intangible part of whom we are) leaves the body when we die physically.

Giving up the ghost is a part of every person’s life. The Bible clearly confirms this as shown in the table above. Giving up the ghost has nothing to do with Halloween practices or man-made ghostly images. It is, instead, what happens when God’s life-giving breath that He breathed into us at physical birth leaves the physical body.

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Genesis 2:7

For by him [Jesus] were all things created … and by him all things consist.
Colossians 1:16-17

The Holy Ghost is alive. Jesus died and gave up His ghost; however, He is alive today as the person of the Holy Ghost working through the Holy Spirit (spirit) in our lives.

… because I [Jesus] live, ye shall live also.
John 14:19

Before Jesus “gave up the ghost” He, like us who are saved, was, in His earthly flesh, filled with the Holy Ghost and was led by the spirit. He too, had a body, soul, and spirit. However, He was not lost as we were before we were saved.

And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness.

Luke 4:1

We must not lose sight of the fact that Jesus is God and that God is manifest in many different ways (as was/is Jesus):

Thou believest that there is one God …
James 2:19

For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.
1 Timothy 2:5

God was manifest in the flesh [as Jesus Christ] , justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
1 Timothy 3:16

The Holy Ghost is Holy and enables us to partake of His holiness; yet, we do not become God or the Holy Ghost!

The Holy Ghost is the person; the spirit represents the works; yet, they two are one and at times are difficult to discern a difference as their roles overlap. Even though there is a fine line between Holy Ghost and the Spirit, they are both manifestations of God. An important distinctive aspect of the two is summarized in 1 John 5:7-8.

All Three give witness.

And Jesus, when he was baptized, went straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he [John the Baptist] saw the Spirit of God descending like an dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven [God], saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
Matthew 3:16-17

Did you notice that the Godhead is represented at the baptism of Jesus?

It is by the Spirit we are wooed, led, sanctified, drawn, or sealed, but it is the Holy Ghost who does the work: creates, teaches, instructs, reveals, prophesies, and comforts. Who created us? God did. Who did the work? The Son did. It is written:

For by him [Jesus, the Son] were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him.
Colossians 1:16

The Scripture teaches that it was:

  • the person of the Holy Ghost Who impregnated Mary.
  • Jesus baptizes with the Holy Ghost, and
  • blasphemy of the Holy Ghost is an unforgiveable sin
  • The Holy Ghost is the Comforter sent by Jesus to minister to us.

Jesus is God: … How is it that ye do not understand?

Mark 8:21

And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh [Jesus], justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
1 Timothy 3:16

… he that hath seen me [Jesus] hath seen the Father …
John 14;9

… I [Jesus] am in the Father, and the Father in me … the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
John 14:10

Yet, Jesus says, “I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.”
John 14:28

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.  John 14:16-18

Jesus is (manifest as) the Comforter, the Holy Ghost.

The Comforter could not come until a very important event happened. Jesus had to die; that is, He had to give up the ghost and ascend back to Heaven where He was before.

Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
John 16:7

Jesus is the Holy Ghost, the Comforter.

He is ALSO … the Spirit of truth… he dwelleth with you … John 14:17

And I [Jesus] will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever.
John 14:16

… I will come to you. [Jesus is the Comforter].
John 14:18

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost,

whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
John 14:26

… I go away, and come again unto you

[as the Comforter, the Holy Ghost] …
John 14:28

But this spake he [Jesus] of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.
John 7:39

Jesus had not died, risen from the dead, and ascended back to Heaven where He was before.

The name, Holy Ghost, represents important facets in the life of Jesus.

With the death, burial, resurrection and ascension, there was power released to inhabit man which had not existed previously. We are now able to receive POWER and authority within our own spirit and soul: God dwelling within us THROUGH the Holy Ghost.

It’s the same God but varying manifestations.

It’s not the same manifestation of the Holy Spirit that we read about in the Old Testament. It’s the same spirit but not the same manifestation of the Spirit.
Jesus inside man (as the Holy Ghost) did not exist in the Old Testament. Likewise, the NAME Jesus Christ is not in the Old Testament as He was not manifest in the flesh until “the fullness of time” when the Holy Ghost came upon Mary and impregnated her:

And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
Luke 1:35

God sent forth Himself in the person of Jesus Christ: Emmanuel: God with us. (Matthew 1:23)

I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee [sent forth].

Psalm 2:7

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:1

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us [Jesus], (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
John 1:14
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son [Jesus], and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
Matthew 1:23

And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Matthew 28:18-20

Notice that the admonition is not to just baptize (and to be baptized) but to be empowered to teach the gospel. The word teach is used twice in this passage: teach all nations; Teaching them to observe all things: to obey the Word of God.

But ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me… unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Acts 1:8

There is but one God.

But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.
1 Corinthians 8:6

He is the GIFT from GOD to us. Receiving the Holy Ghost is receiving the Power of God from on High, but we have to choose to manifest that power to teach, witness, and live righteously through our lives.

The “principle” of the Godhead being one but manifest in different ways applies to our lives.

As a parent, a son, a daughter, a husband or wife, a teacher, a statesman, a coach, a friend, a pastor, a clerk, an aunt or uncle, we are the same PERSON but manifest in many different ways at different times in our lives. For example, as a parent, I’m concurrently also a mother and a teacher.

GOD is ONE Spirit Who manifests Himself in many ways. The Holy Ghost is a manifestation of Jesus in the Spirit. He is not another spirit but another manifestation of the one and same Spirit of GOD.

This is where “the rubber meets the road”!

Many get carried away with different personal physical manifestations of the Holy Ghost but seem to miss the important “fruit ” of the indwelling of the Holy Ghost. That fruit is
  • (1) to witness the gospel to others, and
  • (2) to live with discipline and obedience to the Word so that our lives glorify God.
However, the Spirit of Truth, the Comforter, the Holy Ghost does not dwell IN us IF we do not keep His commands; that is, if we live unrighteously. Living righteously is not works salvation, but obedience.

Then Peter said unto them, Repent*, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Acts 2:38
*Repentance means we turn from sin.

Study carefully John 14 and 15, noting the number of times Jesus reminds us IF we love Him, we WILL keep His commandments (abide in Him); that is, we obey the Word: John 14: 15, 21, 23, 24. Study carefully John 15.

Couple this with the important message in what many call the “love chapter,” First Corinthians 13. Love therein is expressed contextually as charity; that is, it is something you give with nothing expected in return. Specifically important as the application of this teaching on the Holy Ghost to our lives are verses one and two:

And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
1 Corinthians 13:1-2

Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

John 14:23

Study to shew thyself approved unto God.

Now it is time to
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
2 Timothy 2:15

This important subject, the Holy Ghost, for most of us, remains in some ways a mystery. However, individually, we should continue to search the Scriptures for ourselves.

From a concordance, look up the word Holy Ghost and proceed to study each of these Scriptures. Additionally, we urge you to study the detailed chart below that has been created from most of the Scriptures wherein the Holy Ghost has been recorded in our Bible. This two-column chart records the name Holy Ghost in the left column and some of the Scriptural references to the works of the Holy Ghost in the right column. It’s a great tool to get a better understanding of our precious Holy Ghost.

Acts 9:17 And straightway he [Saul who became Paul] preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God.
